Showing off the new theater space at Laundry on Lawrence, LIDA’s opening production was a hit!

Hearing the production’s name, "Justin Bieber Meets Al Qaeda," spurs some questions itself. The show responded to the 10-year anniversary of September 11th.

The production begins with the main character, Mr. White, sitting in a recliner chair. The chair sits atop a sand pile in the center of the room surrounded by an audience of 99 seats. Alarms and loud noises share the stage with vivid imagery; Mr. White is paranoid and clearly disturbed by the September 11th events to say the least. Mr. White also has a son, Wilson, who shows us a slightly less traumatic side. He has an obsession with pop-culture, and more specifically, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry. This obsession demonstrates a strong contrast to the brief histories on terrorism that are also presented from Max Frisch's "Firebugs," and Albert Camus’ “ The Just Assassins.”

Overall, "Justin Bieber Meets Al Qaeda" is an amazing experience in experimental theater!

Go see it before it closes Oct. 8th!
